Lincoln's life - The Astrological Story Pt II
Dennis Sutton May 2009

Abraham Lincoln's birthchart – his astrological life-map – pictured the thought structure of his unconscious soul-mind or character – and his character reproduced itself as his life story. The dynamic character factors (pictured by the planets) were associated with definite life-matters (the houses in which they were located or influenced by sign rulership): And the most important events in his life occurred when these character factors were turned on by astrological events called progressions. 'Feel-good' harmonious character factors worked to attract fortunate events and 'feel-bad' discordant character factors worked to attract unfortunate events, and each event occurred when his character and external environment gave it the go-ahead. The astrological story that follows precisely details the astrology behind Lincoln's life.

February 1817: Abe (aged 7) shoots (Mars) a wild turkey (6th house) and experiences deep remorse (a 12th house event). Progressed Mars (at 26 Libra 42) – a shooting experience – had moved to form a high-discord obstacle (square) aspect with birthchart Moon – cusp ruler of the 6th house in the 12th house. He never hunts animals again.

This progressed Mars-Moon obstacle (square) aspect started on January 22, 1812 when he was almost three and reached a critical peak state on July 21, 1820 when he was eleven. Mars turned retrograde on October 12, 1826 and on September 18, 1832 again formed the perfect square aspect with the Moon when he was almost twenty-three. The aspect finished on August 24, 1840 when he was thirty. This long-time progression provided constant stimulation to the Moon-Mars character factors and was the outstanding astrological influence on Lincoln's childhood, teenage years and early adult life. More than anything it ensured that his mentality (Moon) developed bravery, courage and fighting skills (Mars) – learned mental qualities he would display throughout his political life.

October 5, 1818: his mother (MC-10th house) dies (an 8th house event). The aspect commenced on November 27, 1863 and reached its peak date 10 months later on August 21, 1864. It was a fast moving aspect and the various events and developments it mapped also occurred at a rapid pace.

The Saturn-Neptune conjunction that recognized the hypocrisy and injustice of slavery was square Mercury and the stumbling blocks to emancipation (mapped by the square aspect) taxed his intellectual skills (Mercury) to the limit; but the idealistic vision of emancipated slaves being transmitted by the Venus-Neptune trine was a stronger emotional force – and it sustained his efforts and eventually overcame all the obstacles.
