The Religion of The Stars.
Part VIII. The Flood and the Tower of Babel.
by C.C. Zain

It is quite significant that the most widely known group of stars in the sky should be associated with the most widely spread tradition. The Pleiades and world cataclysms are associated in the myths of Most Peoples. No less significant is the fact that the next mostly recognized star group -- the Great Bear-- is traditionally, in some manner, associated widely not only with the Pleiades, but with another momentous event recorded by the natives of various continents-- the Tower of Babel and the confusion of tongues. The "Lost Pleiades" is inseparably bound up with the story of a lost continent. The Gigantic Bear is associated with an attempt to storm the gate of heaven by means of a huge tower, resulting in the defeat and confusion of those who made the attempt.

The Iroquois Indians relate that a party of hunters pursuing a bear were attacked by three monster stone Giants, who destroyed all but three of them. These together with the Bear were carried up into the sky by invisible hands. The bear still may be seen pursued by the three hunters, being slain in the Fall and his blood tinting the autumn leaves. Other Indians have the principal seven stars of the constellation named after certain birds which are said to hunt and finally kill the bear. Such traditions are known among the Zunis, the Ojibway, the Onondaga, the Cherokees and other tribes. The Blackfeet know the constellation as the 7 stars of the Dipper, the Zunis as the Great White Bear of 7 stars, the Esquimos of Point Barrow as the Bear with the 7 hunters around him. The Hindus recognize the constellation as the 7 Rishas who were translated. These 7 Hindu Rishas are said to go around and around the pole without setting. In the Greek tradition Juno persuades Tethys and Oceanus to forbid the Bears from descending like other constellations into the sea. A bear hibernates in winter-- which is the night of the Seasons-- even as the objective mind sleeps at night. But from the latitudes where we observe the Bear it never sets, never seems to go down into the Ocean; for representing cold intellect it is not to be submerged by the waves of emotion.

Another legend from the Greek illustrating the self-sufficiency of cold intellect, relates that the Great Bear was a proud princess who because she rejected all suitors was transformed into a bear and nailed to the sky. The Akkadians, who prided themselves on their intellects, held that they were descended from a Bear-- meaning a previous intellectual civilization-- and were known as the Bear Folk. The Tower of Babel was called "the Temple of Seven Lights". At Uzmal in Mexico are 7 pyramids so arranged as to represent the stars of the Great Bear. Those who have made a study of the origin of words report that the name for the smaller pyramids and mounds of earth erected by primitive people "barrow", in medieval times "berw" was once identical with "bear", and that the Welch name for hill, "bryn" has been resolved into the popular name "bruin".

Thruout the world, on various continents, there are remains both great and small of pyramids created by prehistoric man. These pyramids do not come quite to a point at top, having a flat place for altar or fire, Spence states that in the ancient city of Mexico fires built on top of the 600 smaller pyramids at that place made other lighting at night superfluous. The triangle with point up, which is the silhouette of a pyramid, has been used thruout all ages as a symbol of fire. Then Ireland was converted to Christianity one of the most difficult tasks confronting the good Fathers was to abolish the ancient custom of lighting fires on the tops of towers, pinnacles, or conical hills in honor of the Sun. A pyramid has a still deeper and esoteric meaning, but even to the populace a pyramid with a flame on its top would represent the earth receiving the rays of the Sun, for fire is the chief attribute of the Sun, and a mound or pyramid is a construction of earth or stone. This fire at the top of the pyramid, however, is the highest point in the neighborhood touched by the symbol of Solar energy; and astronomically must represent the highest elevation, or Declination, reached by the Sun. In the northern hemisphere it would signify the highest northern latitude of the earth reached by the vertical rays of the Sun; in the southern hemisphere it would represent the highest southern latitude. The Sun reaches its greatest northern elevation at the Summer Solstice, the gate of Hades, where it crosses from Gemini into Cancer. The pyramidal temples of Bel(the Sun) scattered thruout the world represent the highest point reached by the Sun. Those who have made a study of the origin of words have even gone so far as to state that the English Belfries came down to us from words having to do with Bel-fires, or fires to the Sun. A belfry is now a cupola in which a bell is suspended, but in 01d English was a tower used in sieges.

In the traditions of widely spread races the Tower of Babel, or Bel, was erected at a time not far distant from the Deluges and in some manner the tradition mentions the fact of a deluge having happened. Thus concerning the Pyramid at Cholula Mexico, Torquemada records the Aztec tradition that this pyramid was of great antiquity. The Aztecs claimed there had been a deluge and afterwards this pyramid had been erected to reach the heavens, but that the gods were angered by the attempt and dispersed the workmen with lightning after it had reached its present height. The pyramid was dedicated to the Sun-god Quetzalcoatl. Dr. Le Plongeon found an inscription on large Mexican pyramid stating it was erected to commemorate the submergence of Atlantis. Along with the deluge traditions and those concerning the erection of huge towers with which to storm heaven are to be found stories concerning the subsequent confusion of tongues. Thus another Central American tradition runs that Xelhua, one of the 7 Giants (Giant Bear of 7 stars) rescued from the deluge, built the great pyramid of Cholula in order to besiege heaven. This structure was destroyed by fire cast down upon it by the gods who also confounded the language of those who were building it. Certain Australian and also Mongolian peoples possess similar traditions, and Livingston found like myths among the African tribes around Lake Ngami.

The Flood is usually associated with a Ship, and this Ship, or Ark, is pictured by the third Decan of Cancer, Argo. Traditional references, the records of the Egyptians as reported by Solon, certain geological evidence, and the pictured constellations all point to the period of the last great deluge as the time when the Equinox passed from the first decanate of Leo back into the last decanate of Cancer, about 8,919 B.C. Both astrology and geology testify, as well as Egyptian and Chaldean traditions, that there has been not one, but many, deluges and that such deluges occur periodically. Lest someone be tempted to believe that the whole world was submerged thru abnormal rainfall it may be stated that scientific men have calculated the total amount of moisture in the world's atmosphere, and it is found that if all the water in the air were to be precipitated, leaving the atmosphere chemically dry, the amount would only raise the level of the oceans about ten inches, and would diminish the land area very little indeed. Of course there are limited localities where there may be considerable more than ten inches of rainfall; but there is not water enough on and above the earth to begin to submerge the total land area. The only universal flood possible would result through the subsidence of all present land areas and the raising of the beds of the oceans to form something near an equivalent new land area. That the present land has at various times constituted the floor of the ocean is confirmed by geology, but that any sudden inundation has included but a portion of the total land area is likewise certain, as proved by the distribution of fauna and flora.

That the Deluge may not be considered merely a myth I will quote late opinion from Chambers Encyclopedia--"It is remarkable that recent paleontological researches should have established the fact of there having existed an Atlantis in Tertiary times. The Tertiary shells of the United States are identical with a whole series of fossils in the same beds of France. Also the Tertiary vertebrate animals of France have their analogues either in fossil creatures or in living species in America. On this account geologists are justified in concluding that in the Tertiary Epoch a land connection existed between the two continents. The fossil flora of the two continents give a like results. Finally Collomb and Verneuit have collected evidence to show that there actually did exist an enormous island to the west of Spain whose rivers formed the vast, marshy and delta deposits of the Tertiary period in Spain."

So much for traditional Atlantis; but tradition also asserts that at a Still remoter period there was a vast land called Pan, or, by some, Lemuria, where now rolls the Pacific 0cean. And during the present year (l920) a scientist of wide repute reports he has found the fossil remains of fresh water mussels in the Hawaiian Islands that are identical with fresh water mussel fossils found on the west coast or Chili, South America, and that such mussels live and spread only along fresh water streams. He decides this evidence conclusive that at one time there was a great river flowing between South America and what is now the Hawaiian Islands, through a land where now the Pacific presents a broad expanse.

Masonry has a tradition that there were two pillars-- one of marble to withstand the fire, and one of brass to withstand the flood-- upon which the Wisdom of Masonry was recorded to preserve it. Also there were two globes on the surface of which were traced maps of all terrestrial and heavenly bodies, and they were cast hollow the better to withstand inundations and conflagrations. The Egyptian priests told the Greeks that the world had perished not once, but many times, both by flood and by fire. The Bible records the Deluge, and also the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by fire and brimstone out of heaven. The Sybils predicted the world would perish by fire, and the Stoics according to Senaca, held to the same belief.

Among the aborigines of many widely separated lands the occurrence of an eclipse or other unusual Astronomical phenomenon is made an occasion on which they run to sheltered caves, or run to the sea, at the same time holding their arms over their faces as if to shield them from great heat. Among the Arawaks of Guiana, according to Lewis-Spence, there is a myth that Aimon Kondi, the Great Spirit, scourged the earth with fire, those surviving seeking refuge in caves underground. Then a flood followed in which the elect saved themselves in canoes. The tradition among the Tupi-Guarani of Brazil is to the effect that Monan the Creator in anger at mankind decided to destroy the earth by fire, but that Irin Mage, a great magician, extinguished the conflagration with a rain storm which flooded the earth and from which humanity saved itself with difficulty. This prevalence of the idea among savage peoples that the world is in danger of being destroyed by fire, and the various traditions about the fall of Lucifer, Phaeton being struck by lightening for attempting to burn up the earth, the various pyramidal towers that were reputed traditionally to have been destroyed by fire from heaven, the war of the Giants who attempted to dethrone the gods by piling up mountains to the lofty stars and who were buried beneath these mountains-- all these, and many more traditions and scientific facts, indicate that a portion of the earth at various times has been scourged by fire.

In the destruction of Atlantis the Troane(Mayan) MS. states 64,000,000 inhabitants perished. The Mayan Codex Cortesiane MS. Says-- "Trice Mu jumped from its foundations. It was then sacrificed with fire. It burst while being shaken up and down violently by the earthquake."

Just as the zodiacal position of the Sun is the key to annual occurrences, so the position of the Sun at the commencement of the year, the Vernal Equinox, or first point of Aries where the Sun crosses the Equator in Spring, is the index to events in the Great Solar, or Precessional, Cycle. As the Deluge in most countries is traditionally associated with a Ship., or Ark in which the chosen few escape, and as the only ship among the constellations is Argo, we may safely conclude the point in the Great Solar Cycle where the Equinox passes into the decanate corresponding to Argo marks approximately the time of the deluge that happens once every Great Solar Cycle of 25,920 years. Records and other evidence indicate that these periodic deluges are caused by the sudden subsidence of land areas beneath the ocean. It is probable that the locality and the amount of land that thus subsides varies greatly during different Great Solar Cycles. The fable concerning the flight of Canopus, which is the chief star of Argo, and the period designated by both Mayans and Egyptians point also to the entrance of the Vernal Equinox from the first decanate of Leo into the last decanate of Cancer, pictured by the Ark, Argo.

Plato reports that Solon the Greek law giver stated the Egyptian priests told him that Poseidonis sank about 9000 years before his time. This very roughly approximates the date when the Equinox passes from Leo into Cancer, from the fire decanate pictured by Crater, the Cup, into the watery decanate pictured by Argo, the Ship. If the deluge is really a matter of the subsidence a large land area suddenly due to volcanic action, why then the wide spread tradition of torrents of water falling from heaven? No doubt the volcanic disturbance that rends the land asunder permits the ocean waters to flow to the heated interior of the earth's crust, and the steam thus formed gathers quickly in clouds and descends in torrents of water as if the sky had opened. Water would descend under such circumstances in vast quantities as if literally poured from heaven. Let us now remember the paranatellons. When the sign Cancer has completely set, so that the cusp between Cancer and Leo-- which is the point in the zodiac reached by the Equinox, or Cyclic Pointer-- is on the horizon, the sign Aquarius just begins to rise above the horizon in the East. The Life of the world-- for the Equinox, or first of Aries always commences the first, or Life house, of the world-- is thus submerged beneath the western horizon as the Waterman, Aquarius rises victorious in the East. Aquarius is pictured as a man holding an immense Urn from which he pours torrents of water down upon the earth. Both the Ship and the Waterman point to the dividing line between Cancer and Leo as the point in the Great Solar Cycle where the deluge takes place. The ship, Argos, and its opposite, or paranatellon, which is the Southern Fish-- this fish being the opposite decanate and pictured with the water being poured upon it-- and the sign Cancer into which the Equinox passes; all picture the watery nature of the cataclysm, and the means by which those who are warned must escape.

Cataclysms are known to be associated with the Fixed signs of the zodiac; for this has been determined by researches in Mundane Astrology as to the cause of earthquakes. Fire and water are violently antagonistic, as are air and earth. The greatest change of polarity, the greatest magnetic stress possible in the zodiac, occurs when there is a transition from a Fixed Fire sign to a movable Water sign, or vice, versa. This occurs when a heavenly body passes the dividing line between Leo and Cancer and to a less extent when a heavenly body passes from the Fixed Air sign Aquarius to the Movable Earth sign Capricorn. Thus annually the Sun passes these points about the 23rd of July and the 20th of January, the times when we experience the extremes of hot and cold weather. Applying these facts to the Great Solar Cycle-- which is usually spoken of as the Sun entering a certain sign, but which in reality is the Equinox reaching that sign-- and we may safely conclude if a cataclysm occurs at one of these points in the zodiac, a cataclysm of an opposite nature will occur at the opposite violent point. In other words, we look for the extreme of heat during the year to occur when the Sun reaches the opposite point of the zodiac from where it is during the extreme cold weather. We not only look for unsettled weather at the Vernal Equinox but also somewhat at the opposite point; the Autumnal Equinox. So there being much evidence to prove the world suffered from water when the Equinox (commonly spoken of as the Sun) entered Cancer from Leo, we may conclude that if the earth suffers periodically from fire it will be when the Equinox is at the opposite point, the dividing line between Aquarius and Capricorn.

The evidence that could be collected in support of the destruction of portions of the earth by "fire and brimstone from heaven" would more than fill a large volume. Our intent here is only to point to the nature of the destroying influence and the time in each Great Solar Cycle when such a disaster either large or small, varying with different cycles, commonly occurs. Even the word we have undesignedly used, disaster, points to the origin of cataclysms, for it means literally "to blast by the influence of a baleful star". Referring to frontispiece of lesson #73 it will be seen that Leo and Aquarius are opposite signs, therefore, as one rises the other sets. The first decanate of Leo, which begins to rise as the Waterman begins to set is pictured by Crater, the fiery Cup. The name Crater is significant, suggesting a volcano, or fiery furnace. In fact, even as Leo is the Lion's den, so is Crater, the first Decan of Leo, the fiery furnace into which the companions of Daniel were cast. Dan.7:22 "My God hath sent His angel and hath shut the lion's mouths, that they have not hurt me." Dan.3:20 "And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Mesbach and Abednego; and cast them into the burning fiery furnace". Certain it is that in the pictured constellation Crater as it rises is bottom up so that whatever its contents they would be poured out upon the earth, yet unlike the Urn in the opposite sign Aquarius, no water is seen flowing from it. We would naturally expect fire and brimstone to come from a "Crater", and we would not expect water to flow from a sign like Leo to which Crater belongs. The water poured from the Urn in the Airy sign Aquarius is not incongruous, for we have had experience with water falling from the air.

Let us then assume that the ancients who pictured correctly the time of the deluge to occur when the upturned Water Urn should rise triumphant as the point occupied by the Equinox sets and is vanquished, also worked upon correct information when they pictured the "fire and brimstone from heaven" to occur when the decanate of the Fiery Crater rose in the East and vanquished the world as the Equinox set defeated in the West. That is, when the Sun at the beginning of the astronomical year sets, or is vanquished, just as the decanate pictured by Crater rises in the East, it marks the time in the Great Solar Cycle when a portion of the earth is liable to be devastated by fire falling from heaven. When the Sun at the beginning of the astronomical year sets, or is vanquished, just an the pictured Waterman, of the sign Aquarius rises in the East, it marks the time in the Great Solar Cycle when a portion of the earth is liable to be flooded by the water that apparently flows from the Waterman's Urn. As the Equinox retrogrades thru the Great Solar Zodiac at the rate of 2,160 years for one sign, and the Equinox, or place of the Sun at the beginning of the astronomical year, backed from Pisces into Aquarius in the year 1881, causing the beginning of the Aquarian Age to commence at that time, the next cataclysm will not be by water but by fire. It will occur about the time the Equinox passes from Aquarius back into Capricorn, about the year 4041 A.D. The next great deluge will occur approximately half a Great Solar Cycle later, about the year 16,901 A.D.

Having determined by the "Law of the Medes and Persians "which alter not", The time when fire purges the earth, we must next inquire into the nature of the fire and brimstone from heaven. Astronomers estimate that 400,OOO,000 meteors, great and small, fall into the earth's atmosphere each year. Most of them are disintegrated by friction with the air reaching the earth's surface imperceptibly as dust. Meteors usually travel in swarms, in definite orbits about the Sun. The latest findings of astronomy announce that "The nucleus, or central part of a comet's head is made up of meteorites, loosely packed together, with wide interspaces". It is thought that meteors are largely derived from comets. Many comets and some meteor swarms have orbits of known duration. Meteors with which we are most familiar come from definite areas in the sky, and arrive in swarms at definite times of the year. The most famous of these swarms is the "Leonids", so called because the part of the sky from which they seem to fall is the head of the Lion in the constellation Leo. In other words, they fall from the portion of the sky that rises as Aquarius sets; and while this swarm does not fall directly from the fiery Crater, yet from an adjacent region it indicates possibilities in that part of the heavens. These meteoric showers from Leo occur regularly in November, the Death Month of Scorpio, the grandest display on record being Nov. 12, 1833-- "when meteors fell from the starry vault numerous as the flakes of a shower of snow, and a ball of fire was seen at Niagara Falls as large as the Moon". The famous meteor of ancient times called "The Nemean Lion" was believed to have fallen from the Moon upon the Isthmus of Corinth; and tradition asserts that the block on which Diana of Ephesus stood was a meteor.

The first iron worked by the Greeks was meteoric iron, and meteoric iron is found both in Greenland and Mexico in sufficient quantities to have furnished the natives with workable iron for years. This iron all fell from the sky in a heated state thru contact with the earth's atmosphere. Meteors usually exist as dark masses until they strike the air surrounding the earth, and are consequently not seen until then, the same astronomers have at times reported seeing masses several hundred yards in diameter moving across the sky. It is held by Proctor that the Craters seen on the surface of the Moon were caused by Meteors falling upon it, and that such pits and craters would also mark the surface of the earth but for the action of atmosphere and water eroding and altering it. Speculation as to possible injury of the earth thru a shower of meteors devastating a limited area may be supplemented by facts which we quote from the well known authority on comets and meteors, John R. Kippax-- "In the field museum of Natural History, Chicago, are a number of meteoric irons, known as Canyon Diablo meteorites. Lying a mile or two to the East of Canyon Diablo, in Northern Arizona, is Coon-Mountain crater, about which masses of meteoric iron, specimens of which became popularly famous because they contained minute fragments of diamond, are scattered in concentric distribution to a distance of nearly five miles. The crater is an almost perfectly round hole over 4000 feet in diameter, and about 600 feet in depth, and is believed to have been formed by the impact of a meteorite of enormous and hitherto unprecedented size, but which remains as yet undiscovered. It has been conjectured that this monster meteorite had a probable diameter of 500 feet, and was one of a flock of great meteorites that formed the nucleus of a large comet, which probably struck the earth, according to geological indications, not more than 5000 years ago."

If a comet struck the earth at Canyon Diablo 5000 years ago, there is nothing improbable in supposing that other comets of even greater size have struck the earth at other times. And as both the Great Solar Cycle and some Comets are periodic, it is possible that the earth has a severe time with commentary bodies about a given time in each Great Solar Cycle, and that when the Equinox passes from Aquarius into Capricorn is the time for the return of cometary masses or other fragmentary swarms wandering thru space.

While on the subject of meteors it may be well to mention that very recently the remains of organic life of a low order, but similar to that found upon earth, has been found in meteors that astronomers are convinced could never have been projected from the earth. From this some scientists are inclined to believe that meteors brought the first organic life to earth, and that perhaps even epidemics of strange diseases have their origin in meteorites, the cell or germ being insulated from the heat at the surface of the meteor until it breaks up near or at the earth's crust. At least this demonstrates that there is organic life elsewhere in the universe than on the earth; and while not proving that man actually exists on other stellar bodies, shows that he is potentially possible on other spheres. Where organic life exists there are expanding possibilities of the higher forms evolving.

Let us now return to a consideration of the Great Bear, the Pleiades, and the Tower of Babel. As the Bull faces Gemini, and only the fore parts are present, the Pleiades in the shoulder of the Bull form a noteworthy cluster of stars in the early portion of Taurus, being not far from the boundary line between Taurus and Aries. By marking the zodiacal signs on a circular piece of paper and placing within the figure given on the frontispiece of lesson # 73, and revolving the circular paper until the first of Aries covers the first of Leo on the surrounding constellations, a clear idea may be obtained of the position of the signs in relation to the constellations and the Great Solar Zodiac at the time of the Deluge. It will be found that the Autumnal Equinox, Libra, is at the lst. of Aquarius; the Summer Solstice, Cancer, is at the lst. of Scorpio; the Winter Solstice, Capricorn, will be found at the lst. of Taurus-- on the outer circle representing the Great Solar Zodiac and constellations. It will be found that a fire sign covers a fire sign, an earth sign and earth sign and so on; every zodiacal sign being covered by a constellation of its own triplicity. Move the inner circle of signs slightly in the direction traveled by the hands of a clock, as the Great Solar Cycle really carries the signs thru the constellations, and the beginning of the fire signs will be in the last of the watery signs of the Great Solar Zodiac of constellations, and the beginning of each watery sign will be in an airy constellation-- this being the transition of polarity as at the time of the deluge.

Now keep in mind that the Summer Solstice, the 1st. of Cancer, is the "gate of hades" for which the Temples, or Towers of Bel, are erected, because the Sun then reaches its highest elevation in the Northern hemisphere; and that the Great Bear dies when the Sun reaches this point, because it passes from the decanate of the Great Bear in Gemini to the decanate of the Little and perfidious Dog in Cancer. Note that the place of the Summer Solstice, when the Equinox is on the first of constellated Leo, is the first of constellated Scorpio. The Tower of Babel, or "gate of hades", at that time lies directly opposite the 1st. of Taurus. Therefore at the commencement of the year, when the Sun enters the 1st. of Aries, the Pleiades in the first part of Taurus will be culminating on the Mid-Heaven just at Sunrise. The Sun then rises exactly on the line between the decanates of the Ship and the fiery Crater. When the Great Solar Cycle brings about such conditions in the sky that the Pleiades reach a point directly overhead at sunrise of the beginning of the astronomical year, it is time for the deluge. The Tower of Babel, or gate of hades, at that time will be opposite the Pleiades, so that when the Tower sinks in the West the Pleiades rise in the East; and with the Pleiades will rise the decanate pictured by Lepus, the frightened Hare, and the curse of the first decanate of Taurus will be made manifest.

Now reverse the figure so that the lst. of Aries will coincide with the lst. of Aquarius; as the heavens appear half a Solar Cycle after the deluge. It will be found that the fiery signs are covered by the airy constellations, but that moving them slightly in the direction traveled by the hands of a clock, as the Great Solar Cycle actually carries them, and the beginning of the fiery signs will coincide with the last of the earthy constellations. Fire thus mixes with earth at the time of the destruction of the world by fire, even as fire mixes with water at the time of the deluge, the latter being of volcanic origin. It will be found that with the first of the sign Aries on the lst. of constellated Aquarius, that the "gate of hades", the Tower of Babel, or lst. of Cancer, will coincide with the first of constellated Taurus. The Pleiades will then mark the Summer Solstice, which will be at the beginning of the decanate pictured by the frightened Hare. At the commencement of the astronomical year the Sun being in the lst. of Aries, when the Great Solar Cycle has placed the signs among the constellations as we have indicated, the Pleiades will culminate on the Mid Heaven when the Sun sets in the West, destroyed by the rising lst. decanate of Leo, pictured by the fiery Crater.

The inclination of the earth on its axis is measured by the elevation of the Sun at the Solstice, this inclination being marked by the Pyramidal Tower of Bel, more about which will be mentioned later. The different phases of the Great Solar Cycle are marked by the position of the Vernal Equinox among the stars. Both cataclysmic occurrences during a Great Solar Cycle are marked by the same cluster of stars culminating at the commencement of the astronomical year; in one case at Sunrise, and in the other at Sunset. The culminating point is used because stars culminate at the same time in all latitudes, while they rise and set at different times in different latitudes on the earth. The Sun, however, at the commencement of the astronomical year rises and sets just twelve hours apart at all latitudes, The ancients, therefore, having determined the cycle governing the two cataclysms of each cycle of the Equinox, picked a cluster of stars to mark the time of these events whose relative position at these times would require no other calculation than to be abroad either at Sunrise or Sunset and watch fro the cluster to reach its highest point. When these Pleiades and the Tower of Babel, or Summer Solstice, coincide, the cataclysm is not a flood, but a shower of fire from heaven; but when the Tower of Bel occupies the point opposite the Pleiades, the cataclysm is a deluge. In either case the first of Taurus, the portion of the Bull missing and portrayed by the frightened Hare, is directly overhead at the commencement of the year, this being the cursed decanate associated today with blindness, evil eye, black magic and voodoo in general. It is the portion of the zodiac with which Orion, Jason and Moses had so much trouble. It represents attachment to earthly things that are doomed to pass from man's possession.

The time of year also when the cataclysm takes place is signified by the culmination of the lst. decanate of Taurus at midnight. That is the decanate corresponding to the Hare and the curse Ishtar placed on Gilgamesh, is exactly overhead at midnight when the Sun in its annual pilgrimage passes thru the lst. decanate of Scorpio. On the 31st. of October, on which day Halloween, or the destruction of the earth, is celebrated the world over, the Sun is in the lst. decanate of the sign of Death, Scorpio, and on midnight of that day the opposite decanate, pictured by the Hare, is directly on the Mid Heaven. This first decanate of Scorpio is pictured by the constellation Ophiuchus, the Man who wrestles with the generative serpent, even as the earth at this time wrestles with the cataclysmic forces that generate the conditions for new life.

The story of the deluge, whether told by the Thinklets of Alaska, the wild Indians of the Orinoco in South America, those of Brazil, Cuba, or Peru, the Cherokee Indians of North America, the Fiji Islanders of the Pacific, the Australian Blacks, or the Russian Tartars-- everywhere it coincides largely with the account given in the Bible, with the Babylonian account translated from cuneiform inscriptions, and with the Greek version in which Deucalion and Pyrrha because of their virtue were alone saved of all the people in the world, their little ship coming to rest finally on top of Mount Parnassus. In the biblical version, and in some others, the Pleiades are not mentioned directly. But doves are ruled by Venus, and Venus not only rules Taurus, but is special ruler over the first decanate where the Pleiades function. The Pleiades are widely known today as anciently as the heavenly doves, and various traditions relate that the 7 sisters were changed into doves when placed in the sky. In those deluge traditions where the Pleiades are not directly mentioned, a dove usually plays an important part. Humbolt informs us, for instance, that the Aztecs, the Zapotecs, the Tlascoltecs, and the Mechoacans, in Mexico, had paintings of the deluge. The Noah of these nations saved himself with his wife on a raft, both the Mountain and the Dove appearing in the pictures. The mountain where the boat landed, or where the inhabitants took refuge, is pointed out by the aborigines of various places. By some it is the peak of Old Zuni in New Mexico, to others Mount Neba in Guaymi-- each tribe and people having its own sacred mountain that was a haven to the survivors of the flood.

The ancients divided the year by the Pleiades, just as the Great Solar Cycle is divided into two portions by the cataclysms when the Pleiades are in analogous positions. Thus Hesiod states the Greeks commenced their Winter Season at that time by the setting of the Pleiades in the morning and Summer by their rising. They called one half of the year Pleiades Above, and the other half, Pleiades Below. This custom is still followed by the Society Islanders-- far remote from Greece-- who call the halves of their year Pleiades Above and Pleiades Below, marking the commencement in the same way. The year in India commenced in the month of Cartiguey, which means Pleiades. Athar-aye is the name Pleiades in Chaldean and Hebrew, and Athor (Pleiades) is the Egyptian November

The festival to the dead called by us Halloween is observed by the Australian Bushmen, who paint white stripes over their bones and dance in the firelight to represent skeletons. When first discovered by white men it was observed by the natives of the Tonga Islands of the Fiji group, and in Peru(where it is called Ayamarca, meaning a corpse carried in arms) on the same day as in Europe; and the Egyptians regulated their Solar Calendar by this day so it might remain unchanged. In Ceylon it was observed on the same day. In Egypt it is an occasion for launching Osiris in an Ark on the sea and watching the image borne out of sight-- and a dove is also connected with this Egyptian tradition. Due to observing a Lunar instead of a Solar Calendar the Hindu Durga(Halloween) is held on the 17th, of the Pleiades month(November) just as the biblical tradition relates that the flood at that time occurred on the 17th. of the Jewish second month, which is our November. The Japanese reckon days by the Pleiades, the Dyaks of Borneo regulate their farming by them, and the Japanese festival of lanthorns originated as did our Halloween. It was celebrated by the Druids on the same day of the year we now observe, the nuns being obliged to pull down and rebuild the roof of the Temple-- on this night of all the year the sacred fires being extinguished. It is a custom of similar import among our young people on the night of Halloween to go about destroying and scattering property and doing as much mischief as possible-- for was not this the night in which the world was once destroyed?

Statistics could be multiplied indefinitely. The dove in such traditions represents the Pleiades, which by their position indicate when the cataclysmic period is passed.
