WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE ZODIACAL SIGN VIRGO

It is not without practical illustration that Virgo is constellated in the vault of heaven as a Virgin. The Sun in Virgo, in a woman's chart, is some testimony that she will remain single or will not marry early in life. This holds true also for men who have the Moon in Virgo in their birth-charts. The man whose Moon is in Virgo and the Woman whose Sun is in Virgo are usually very particular about their associates of the opposite sex. And this trait of being particular gives the Virgo native his best quality of Analysis. It is when this best quality is overdone and used to discern the flaws of other people and their plans that it becomes his worst quality--Criticism. Facts, statistics and easily available condensed information on important subjects appeal directly to the person with Sun, Moon or Ascendant in this sign. It is his practicality and ability to detect error or imperfection in people or projects that gives the Virgo person the key phrase of I Analyze. As this is the sign of assimilation the Virgo person is often fussy about his choice of food in an effort to promote satisfactory digestion.

As Virgo, the original Garden of Eden, is the harvest sign this section of the zodiac quite fittingly teaches us that as we sow so shall we reap. And "If a Man Sows Discordant Thoughts He Will Reap Painful Experiences, But if He Sows Thoughts of Harmony He will Garner Success and Happiness" states the B. of L. Spiritual Test for this sign. The Bible records the significance of Virgo as the story of the Virgin Mary who represents mother earth consisting of spirit (Holy Ghost), or the Sun, and giving birth, after an evolutionary period of gestation, to the Son of God--man. Moreover the church borrowed mother Mary directly from Egypt where she was the Virgin Isis with a new Moon in her arms instead of the baby Jesus. In Genesis this same Virgin is Eve. Adam, the human soul was "beguiled" into union with Eve (into incarnation on mother earth) to "...become as one of us, to know good and evil." Thus did the Eve of Genesis give birth to the human race, enabling it to partake of her fruit of discrimination and experience. Materially Virgo represents woman, the counter part of man, uniting with him to fulfill a mutual destiny.

This sign of science and wisdom has The Sacred Tarot admonition: "Remember, then, son of earth, that the mind is enlightened in seeking God with the eyes of the will. God has said, 'Let there be light', and light inundated space. Man should say, 'Let truth show itself and good come to me. And if man possesses a healthy will, he will see the truth shine, and guided by it will attain all to which he aspires. If Veiled Isis (Virgo) should appear in the prophetic sign of thy horoscope, strike resolutely at the door of the future and it will open to you; but study for a long time the door you should enter. Turn your face toward the sun of justice, and knowledge of the true will be given you. Keep silent in regard to your intentions, so as not to be influenced by the contradictions of men."

Virgo governs the color dark violet, and such herbs as valerian, millet, endive, skullcap, woodbine, barley, oats, rye, wheat, privet and succory. The talismanic gem Jasper as well as the number 2, comes under the influence of this sign. Virgo people are industrious, mentally active, studious, scientific, alert for facts, fluent, ingenious, witty and ever seek to know "How" results may be achieved. They are thoughtful, serious, careful, cautious, modest, and contemplative.

The first decanate of Virgo__the Mercury decanate__is most typical of the sign as a whole. The restlessness and adaptability of those who have this decanate dominant is pictured by the Constellation Bootes, the Bear driver, who follows the Bear picturing the Reason decanate of Gemini around the sky, driving him on. The critical, assimilative and discriminative faculties of those born here are devoted to segregating life's experiences and attaining practical benefit from so doing. This gives to the decanate its keyword of Achievement.

The middle decanate of Virgo has the sub-influence of Saturn ruling over it through Capricorn. Thus it is the labor decanate of the labor sign. This fact was clearly portrayed by the ancient magi when they constellated this decanate as Hercules--the hero-- who was famous, among other things in mythology, for his twelve superhuman labors, one for each zodiacal sign. This indicates the tendency of those born with Sun, Moon or Ascendant in this decanate to attract many and varied experiences and to labor and toil for what they desire to attain in life. It gives to the decanate its keyword of Experience.

Venus is the sub-ruler of the last decanate of the sign of work, through The sign Taurus. There is the tendency to let others "work" them too much and to get work out of them. It is the submissiveness of this decanate which procures the keyword Renunciation. But as motives of this decanate often contribute much worthwhile to human welfare this satisfaction felt helps to compensate for past sacrifices. It is this tendency to attract little material reward for their labors that explains why Corona Borealis, and Iron Crown, was used by the ancient Masons to picture this section of the ecliptic in the stars.

A simple hieroglyph representing a sheaf of wheat, closed at the end to indicate conservation of energy, was and is used as the symbol of Virgo.
